Archbishop Janani Luwum Day
Remembering Archbishop Janani Luwum: A Legacy of Faith and Courage
Today, February 16th, marks the 48th commemoration of Archbishop Janani Luwum, a day of remembrance for a man whose life and legacy continue to inspire many. Archbishop Luwum, the former Archbishop of the Anglican Church in Uganda, was martyred on this day in 1977 under the regime of President Idi Amin. His unwavering faith and courage in the face of oppression have left an indelible mark on the hearts of many.
The commemoration takes place in Wii-Gweng, Mucwini Sub County, Kitgum District, where Archbishop Luwum was born and laid to rest. This year, the event has attracted a significant number of foot pilgrims from across Uganda, who have embarked on a pilgrimage to honor his memory. The journey, which began on February 9th from St. Philip’s Cathedral in Gulu, has seen pilgrims trekking through various locations, including Cwero, Atanga, Acholibur, and Kitgum Town Parish, before reaching their final destination.
The main celebrant for this year’s event is the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, The Most Rev. Dr. Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu, with the Rt. Rev. Assoc. Prof. Sheldon Mwesigwa, Bishop of Ankole Diocese, delivering the sermon. A 540-member choir, representing various dioceses across Northern Uganda, will lead the worship. The event is expected to be graced by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni as the Chief Guest.
The theme for this year’s commemoration is “Imitating God’s Goodness by Doing Good” (Galatians 6:9), reflecting Archbishop Luwum’s life of faith and his commitment to doing good in the face of adversity. The government has also announced plans to develop Mucwini into a modern tourism site to honor Archbishop Luwum’s legacy.
As we remember Archbishop Janani Luwum today, we are reminded of his courage, faith, and the ultimate sacrifice he made for his beliefs. His legacy continues to inspire and guide us, urging us to stand firm in our convictions and to always strive for goodness and justice.
Let us honor his memory by embodying the values he stood for and by continuing to work towards a better, more just world.
