In a continued effort to safeguard land rights and promote peaceful coexistence, Hon. Diana Nankunda Mutasingwa, Woman MP for Buikwe District and Minister of State in the Office of the Vice President, visited Senyi village in Ssi Bukunja Subcounty to engage directly with residents over unresolved land disputes.
Addressing the community, Hon. Mutasingwa emphasized the importance of nurturing respectful relationships between landlords and Bibanja holders—lawful tenants who occupy land under Uganda’s unique tenure system. “Building good relations between landlords and tenants is key to protecting their rights and reducing conflicts,” she stated. “When land rights are respected, land becomes a source of livelihood rather than a source of disputes.”
Her message resonates deeply in Ssi Bukunja, a region where tensions have flared due to contested land allocations and forest giveaways, often sparking protests and fears of land grabbing. Hon. Mutasingwa’s intervention aligns with her broader advocacy across Buikwe District, where she has previously halted illegal evictions and confronted officials over unlawful demolitions.
Uganda’s Land Act and the historic Busuulu and Envujjo Law of 1928 provide Bibanja holders with hereditary security of tenure, shielding them from eviction without due process. These protections are vital in rural communities, where land is not only a home but a foundation for agriculture, income, and generational stability.
Hon. Mutasingwa’s visit to Senyi underscores her commitment to justice, dialogue, and sustainable development. By promoting legal awareness and peaceful mediation, she continues to empower communities to turn land from a source of conflict into a catalyst for prosperity.
