In a decisive move to quell rising tensions over land ownership, Hon. Diana Nankunda Mutasingwa, Minister of State in the Office of the Vice President and Woman MP for Buikwe District, joined the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) and local authorities in Lugonjo village, Kikwayi Parish, to address a land dispute that has stirred unrest within the community.
Speaking at the gathering, Hon. Mutasingwa reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting the rights of Bibanja holders under the Presidential directive and the Uganda Land Act. “Bibanja holders have the right to occupy land as long as they pay the agreed nominal rent, known as Busuulu,” she emphasized. “Landlords are prohibited from unlawful evictions of these people. It is therefore essential for all stakeholders to respect these guidelines to restore peace and stability in our communities.”
Her intervention comes amid a broader campaign to curb illegal land evictions and enforce lawful land management practices across Buikwe District. Hon. Mutasingwa has previously halted unauthorized demolitions and confronted officials over improper land handling, earning praise for her proactive stance on land justice.
The Uganda Land Act provides a legal framework for land ownership and dispute resolution, mandating that landowners and occupants operate within environmental and legal boundaries. It also empowers District Land Tribunals and mediation processes to resolve conflicts amicably.
Hon. Mutasingwa’s presence in Lugonjo signals a strong governmental response to land-related grievances and a renewed push for community harmony. Her leadership continues to resonate with residents who seek protection from exploitation and assurance of their land rights.
