In a landmark consultative meeting held at Jinja State Lodge, Hon. Diana Mutasingwa, State Minister in the Office of the Vice President and Woman MP for Buikwe District, joined H.E. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and other national leaders for a focused discussion on the future of Uganda’s fisheries sector.
The meeting brought together representatives of the Bakenyi fishing community from Buikwe District, highlighting the government’s commitment to inclusive dialogue and sustainable development.
🎣 A Vision for Safer, Sustainable Fisheries
President Museveni outlined a bold plan to transform Uganda’s fisheries, emphasizing the need to:
- End illegal fishing practices
- Protect breeding zones
- Expand surveillance across water bodies
He also reaffirmed the critical role of indigenous fishing communities in safeguarding the lake’s ecosystem and ensuring responsible fishing practices.
“The President expressed his commitment to safer, more sustainable fisheries,” Hon. Mutasingwa noted. “He reaffirmed the role of indigenous fishermen in looking after the lake and its activities.”
💰 UGX 1 Billion per SACCO: A Game-Changer for Fishing Communities
In a major policy announcement, the President emphasized that fishing communities must be organized into SACCOs (Savings and Credit Cooperative Organizations) based on geographical proximity. Each SACCO will receive UGX 1 billion in government support to help fishermen transition into the money economy and improve their livelihoods.
“I thank H.E. the President and the Government of Uganda for prioritizing the economic transformation of fishing communities through organized support and targeted investment of our people,” Hon. Mutasingwa said.
